Generational Accountability

Exodus 34:6

6And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,

“God does not reveal himself in an abstract absoluteness, but in a personal and intimate relation to the world. He does not simply command and expect obedience; He is also moved and affected by what happens in the world and reacts accordingly. Events and human actions arouse in him joy or sorrow, pleasure or wrath… Man’s deeds may move Him, affect Him, grieve Him or, on the other hand, gladden and please Him. … the God of Israel is a God who loves, a God who is known to, and concerned with, man. He not only rules the world in the majesty of his might and wisdom but reacts intimately to the events of history.”

and leave behind a blessing—
grain offerings and drink offerings
for the Lord your God.

1But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. 2He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
